Dr. Julien Michels
Julien Michels is currently the Managing Director of re-fer AG and a former R&D project leader at the Swiss Federal Laboratories of Materials Science and Technology (Empa). He received his MSc in Civil Engineering at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland in 2005 and his engineering doctorate in the field of steel fiber reinforced concrete at the University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg, in 2009. He started his professional career at Empa in early 2010, being responsible for various R&D projects in the field carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) for structural retrofitting as well as for service work activities with industrial clients. His research activities initially focused on prestressed CFRP systems with gradient anchorage without any mechanical fasteners. Under his supervision, several projects investigating for instance thermal stability of epoxy resins, structural behavior of CFRP strengthening during asphalt application at construction stage or long-term durability under freeze-thaw cycles were launched and executed. These investigations in collaboration with master and doctoral students as well as postdoctoral researchers resulted in a high number of scientific publications. In 2016, he joined company re-fer AG, the first commercial supplier of iron-based shape memory alloy (‘memory-steel’) strengthening systems for existing structures. He is responsible for sales, engineering consultancy, product approval and R&D activities. His current research interests cover various aspects of shape memory alloys in civil engineering, ranging from mechanical performance, efficient application systems, long-term effects, design, economic performance and ecological sustainability.
